Ellem Jantzen sculpts objects by hand out of natural material (paper, fabric, flowers, sticks and stones, etc.), photographs them, then remakes them on the computer to build ideosyncratic and hybrid images. Born in the Mid-West, she is now California-based. She studied graphic arts and fashion design, then worked for several major corportions in a design capacity. Disillusioned with the corporate environment and longing for something more creative, she began the digital manipulation of photos of her objects. Her art is usually symmetrical, and one is conscious of the hand or fingers that are part of them. Her forms are both strange and powerful. Her method incorporates several artistic techniques and provides a link between traditional and digital art forms, between the two dimensional world and the three dimensional world of sculpture.
